THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
UNEMPLOYMENT AT HOME. Probably no factor exercised a.greater influence upon the result - of the general election at Home than that of unemployment. No party was able to ignore it, and two of them gave extraordinary prominence to it. While the Conservative po.icy was to rely upon the continuance of a trade revival and upon measures for the encouragement cf that revival to bring down the volume of unetnp.oyment to a normal level, the Liberal and the Labour Parties exploited more spectacular schemes for attacking ‘the problem. Mr Lloyd George’s plan for tfte conquest of unemployment within a year is to borrow hugely and absorb all unemployed labour in the construction of roads. The Labour Party, while accusing the Libera’s of stealing its offspring and decking it out in gaudy colours, hopes by a readjustment of taxation to stimulate a demand for the country’s products.
