PIPE BLOWN TO ATOMS
SM OKER’S REM ARK A BLE EXPERIENCE.
AUCKLAND, June 14. A Cambridge young man received the surprise of his life a night or two ago when he had a most fortunate escape from being struck by a bullet and perhaps killed. The man and several others were having a smoke and chat in the smoking room of a local boarding house when there was a loud report and the pipe which one of the occupants of the room was smoking was blown to atoms. ft appears that the young man had been out shooting previously and had left some pea-rifle cartidges in his pocket. One of the cartridges had got among his tobacco, and when filling his pipe the cartridge, too, was rammed into the bowl. Fortunately the bullet went straight up and embedded itsell in the ceiling of the room. Except for the shattered pipe no damage was done.
