The towns refused to be scared hv the black bogey and solidly hacked Mr Smuts. Labour lost nine and the South African Party gained 9 and the Nationalists gained two. The position is: South African Party ... 40 Nationalists 19 Cresswdlits 4 Councillites 3 Probably Labour will hold the balance. CAPETOWN, June 12. Hon. Air Sampson, Alinister for Posts, has been elected. The coloured native votes have gone solid for the South African Party, led by General Smuts. LATEST RETURNS. PACT SUCCESSFUL. (Received this day at 10 a.m.) CAPETO ii N, June 14. Tlie state of the parties at four o’clock was: South African Party 42 Nationalists 18 Cresswellitcs 5 Councilites 3 Allowing for doubtful constituencies the Pact is assured of a majority of about twenty. Johannesburg North was won by the South African Party by one vote. Air Jansen (Speaker) was returned Smuts. Hertzog, Havenga (Finance) and Kemp (Agriculture) were also elected.
