NAVAL BIGAMIST
PLEA FOR LENIENCY. •,By Telegraph—Press Association), Auckland, Jnue 13. Wilfred Minty, a petty officer on H.M.S. “Veronica,” appeared for sentence at the Supreme Court to-day on a charge of bigamy. His counsel said that the young woman with whom he went through the form of marriage had entirely forgiven him. Minty, he said, had a wife and children in England, and pay allotments had regularly been .tespatched to them. Counsel claimed that the only excuse for the prisoner’s action was that he had committed the crime in a moment of mental aberration. Appealing to the judge not to imnose a term of imprisonment, counel said that if this was done, Minty vould he court martialled on his release, and wAuld lose privileges which ae was due to receive on completing ,22 years’ service, over 19 years of which lie had served. His wife and children would also lost the pay allotment if Minty was sent toJgaol. The Crown Prosecutor undertook to inquire of the naval authorities as to the procedure. Sentence was accordinyly deferred until to-morrow.
