The complaint of these up-river residents is that under present conditions the trenches for the set nets extend practically across the river, and the effect is that fish are not allowed to pass up-stream. As set nets are a privilege only in the Hokitika river, the practice it is considered should be stopped..

The Greymouth Harbour Board will at an early date be faced with expenditure estimated at approximately £4OOO for the replacement of the boilers at the hydraulic power station connected with the wharf cranes and the capstans. As a result of a recent inspection, both •of tlie boilers were given only a short span of further scivice, probably not more than twelve months. One of the boilers has certainly reached the retiring age, as it was installed forty-throe years ago. The other was installed when the plant was. duplicated in 1908. The engine and boiler then cost nearly £2500, and the cost of boilers has increased considerably since 1908. . Tlie Railway Donartnieiit operates tlie hydraulic plant, but it is owned and maintained ijy the Greymouth Harbour Board.
