WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE

THURSDAY, JUNE 13Hi

The League met at the County Chambers at 7.3 U o’clock. Present: Dr Tcichelmann (President), Messrs W. Wilson, I’. W. Bruce, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, W. E. Richards, Alec Graham, A. Dew, W. Jeffries, J. j./McIntosh, W. uverr and H. G. F. Coles (lion. sec). Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Butler, Mackay and Newman (2). Tlie minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Southland League forwarding copy of fifteenth annual report and uaiance sheet.—Received. From Fire Brigade Demonstration Committee, asking donation towards deficiency.—Received and £3 3s voted. From Eric James, Alakaroa, report on tourist traffic in the far south.— Received with thanks. From Emmett and Peart, Wellington, offering colored enlargements ol Westland scenic views.—Received. The work was spoken of very highly by those who had seen it. It was resolved to enquire prices. From Canterbury League forwarding minutes and asking for annual report.—Received and matter supplied by Secretary. From Wood Pulp Syndicate, Christchurch, with reference to the delay on the part of the Government in dealing with an application for waste timl>er areas to undertake wood-pulping on an extensive scale for which n company of £350,000 was proposed.—Revived. After an exp unction of the proposal and discussion on details, it •is resolved to support the proposal for the new industry, and join in urging the Government to deal promptly with Hie application now before it for so many months. ADVERTISING THE DISTRICT. The President explained that in lieu >f a considerable sum as heretofore in advertising in pictorial publications issued at Christmas, it was suggested space lie taken for advertising purposes in conjunction with the Canterbury Progress League at the Canterbury Industrial Exhibition at Cnristchurch in November next.

Mr Evans enlarged on the proposal and said it was hoped to have the cooperation of the Publicity and Tourist Departments in the matter, and secure by a sustained effort throughout the period of the exhibition a very excellent advertisement for the district.

The matter was discussed favourably oy those present, and it was indicated unancial support would be forthcoming from uue Acclimatisation and Tourist, Society, local business people (including hotelkepcrs and garage proprietors) and proprietors of local resorts at Waiho and Welieka etc.

Dr Tcichelmann, Messrs Jeffries, Evans and Coles were appointed a subcommittee to go into the matter, enquiring as to the cost of space etc., and the general support which would be forthcoming with finance. GENERAL. On the stigestion of Mr Bruce it was resolved to support the Government proposal, ol‘ completing the South island Main Trunk runway, thereby adding materially to the value of existing railway systems, and particularly the East a lid AVest Coast railway.

It was also decided to enquire from the Canterbury Automobile Association what support the League could give as promised previously in securing the improvement of the Springfield-Bealey road for motor traffic.

Air Mclntosh brought forward the special importance of reviving floating on Lake Maliinapua Creek, and the necessity for rc-opcning the acquatie route by Maliinapua Creek. It was suggested access for vehicles bo provided to a point above the falls, so that motor boating would be possible at all stages of the tides. After general discussion as to road access to the lake, it was resolved to ask the Tourist Department to support the proposal mentioned by Mr Mclntosh, and provide the short road access necessary to assure boating facilities being available.

It was decided to meet in future on the second Thursday in the month, and that on the evening of the next meeting (July 11th.) the annual meeting be held. Air Evans was appointed auditor.

The meeting concluded at 9 o’clock
