Twelve thousand sterling has been given to Professor Picard of the Brussels University to enable him to construct a balloon capable of rising 52,300 feet, where Professor Picard will study the cosmic rays and other '•■atmospheric problems. Specialists express the opinion that great air liners' will, in a few years, be travelling at these altitudes. AMAZING DIVE. ESCAPE FROM BLAZING ’PLANE. LONDON, June 12. Passing Folkestone at a height of 2000 feet, Flying-Officer Turmer made an amazing dive for safety from a blazing aeroplane. He had just left th© aerodrome when a rush of wind fanned the whole plane into a -ball of fire. Turmer, who was the sole occupant, adjusted the parachute and i jumped, and he landed with only a broken arm, while the machine nosedived and was completely wrecked. BRITISH ARMY. OFFICERS TO BE NUMBERED. LONDON, June 12. It is officially announced that British army officers will be allotted personal numbers for rapid identification in an\ further national emergency. The numbers are to be applicable to all commissioned officers after the mobilisation of regulars, reserves and territorials, and to be quotable after their names in all official documents.
