THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

: , NORTH. AND SOUTH. It is, said that New Zealanders travel more than most people; that they move about freely in their own country, and a large proportion go abroad. This may be, but there has not been so much intermingling of North and South that one can regard the visit of Canterbury and West .and farmers to Auckland as a mere incident. The truth ..is, that .geographical conditions check the natural New Zealand" disposition to travel, and help, to perpetuate local prejudices.. It is quite an old saying in Canterbury ..that Aucklapd imagines tbe southern boundary of New Zealand to be the limit of . the kauri, and no. doubt Auckland citizens liave at times been tempted to make a similar remark about the Southern provinces and the Waitaki River or Cook Strait.
