ELECTRIFICATION WORK
TUNNEL AUTOMATICALLY : CONTROLLED.
CHRISTCHURCH, June 11
Mr A. J. Jeffs, superintending engineer for the British Electric Company, who supplied the material for the electrification of the Lyttelton railway line, is still in Christchurch. He will not return to England for some time yet. 1 The terms of fthe contract for the supply of the material laid it down that the [contractors should give a guarantee against faulty work for a period of sit months after .the line was taken over by flie Railway Department, and until tlia.p time has elapsed, Mr Jeffs will remain in Christchurch. The control of the apparatus which supplies the power of the Lyttelton line was taken over by the Railway Department soon after the official opening of the line in February, and since then it has been operated iby the Department. Tbe sub-station at Woolston, in which the whole of the apparatus is housed is fully automatic in action, and only requires a visit from a maintenance engineer once « week. Special safeguards against trouble have been installed, and in the case of anything going wrong the railway control office and the Public Works sub-station sit Addington arc automatically notified.
