TUESDAY, JUNE 11th, The Council met at 2 p.m. Present: Messrs Bernard Ward (County Chairman), E. A. Wells, M. Houston, W. Searle, J. Donovan, T, R. Chesterman, M. Keenan, and W. Jeffries. The minutes 'were confirmed and outward 3 correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Treasury,, notifying accrued revenue to credit of County Fund Ac-count.—-Received:,.. From Minister, of Public Works, regretting could not Visit''district on late trip, but will make comprehensive tour later on.—Received. From Minister of; Lands,; regarding Education reserves at Harihari, advising that Department is looking into ways and m rails 1 of opening the reserves for settlement, and suggestion will receive' careful consideration. — Received. v From Highways Greymouth with reference to signs at railway and tramway crossings, asking for copy circular referring to same.—Received. From Commissioner of Transport, forwarding extracts Ifrom the Gazette showing -additional regulations under the -Motor Vehicles Act, 1924.—Received. From Health Officer, notifying cases of infectious diseases. —Received. From Officer of Health, Christchurch, forwarding particulars of defects found on annual hotels inspection by Health Officer, and asking Council to serve notices accordingly.—Received.

From J. O’Brien, M.P., Greymouth, advising that a special grant will be applied for road into Westland Power Loy.’s ‘'generating station, Dillmanstown.—Received; appreciative letter to be forwarded to the writer.

From Westland Acclimatisation Society, referring to representations from Council regarding Okuru run track used by stalkers and assistance to C. M. Harris, . advising the Society has granted a- vote of £lO for same.—Received.

From Fire Brigade Demonstration Committee, with regard to recent demonstration, asking if the Council Would assist in liquidating- by a donation.—Received; no action taken. From regarding claim for heavy traffic license fee.—Received.

From Liquidator, Mount Greenland Mining Coy. asking Council to consider making recommendation to Mines Department to treat the rents owing by Company as irrecoverable. —Received ; request acceded to. From G. H. Robertson, Harihari, drawing Council’s attention to dangerous condition of bridge giving access to residence. —Received. It was stated that this was on a main highway, and the Council had no liability.

From J. M. Gibb, Tatare, asking for ' 'consent to lease Waiho Ferry Reserve for a further period of 14 years, at increased annual rental of £B. Received and agreed to. From A. C. Scott, Karangarua, asking Council to have a road opened along front of Section 3431 to give access from Section 2574 to main road for dray traffic.—Received; legal position to be pointed out; Bruce Bay Committee to be asked for report on request for repairs. From J. Mundy and other butchers, applying for renewal of slaughter house licenses.—Received and granted From J. Condon, Mahitahi, advising that meeting at Bruce Bay had been postponed to a later date, and to,ter advising the same • committee

agreed to carry on for the ensuing period.—Received and approved. From W, D. Nolan, Okuru, advising that Overseer Carroll stated £IOO is available for Hapuka Creek Bridge reconstruction.—Received.

From same, advising meeting of Advisory Board held and committee elected /advising Jackson Bay road has been made passable for stock traffic; also with regard to suggested deputation to Wellington, asking the Council to co-operate.—Received; a grant of £5 was made towards the purchase of three boats. It was resolved that Mr Searle represent the Council with the proposed southern deputation to Wellington.

From Ovterseer Millner, reporting having inspected line of road on south bank of Little Wanganui river, advising attention required to fill in large holes and reduce steep banks, the first portion will cost approximately £25 to repair, and from gorge to sea beach £IQO to £l5O would be required.—Received; the Overseer was instructed to report as to necessary work at Kakapotalii and town members deal with the report. From same, , forwarding report on progress of work on the Secondary Highways for the month of May.—Received.

From Foreman Reynolds, forwarding report regarding Little Wanganui protection works, and local bridge works. —Received.

From Mercantile and General Insurance Coy. Ltd. refunding £1 !Js on account of motor vehicles insurance, third party risks.—Received. From D. Agnew, Arahura Valley, asking permission to erect electric line across Humphreys road to his farm.— Received. The Council offered no objection.

From W. IT. Chinn, Tetaho, thanking Council for vote of thanks and letter of appreciation for services.— Received.

From Harihari Branch, Farmers’ Union, expressing thanks for prompt action by the Council in advocating the ronding of Poerua run on a satisfactory basis.—Received.

From C. Cook, Kaihinu, asking attention to the One Mile road drain, Arahura.—Received; Overseer to report.

From Searle Bros., applying for renewal of slaughter-house .license. Received and granted. From Ross Lime Kiln Coy per secretary asking for report ol Overseer to damage done to approaches to Ross Lime Kiln Road and oilering subsidy

Harvey waited on the Council asking for road access from Milltown to Arahura, a distance of two miles at an estimated cost of £I6OO. After discussion it was resolved that M.r Harvey confer with other settlers, the Conned promising to give every possible assistance to the request made. The draft letter for submission to the Minister of Forestry was read and approved on the motion of Messrs Houston and Searle. * FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Your Committee has the honour to report that the accounts presented for the month of May, 1929, have been carefully examined, and beg to recommend that the amount as approved, tota lling ;C2S6o 8s 4d, be passed for payment.—Received. ORDER PAPER. The Chairman moved:—“ That the accounts presented for the month of -May, 1929, as revised and recommended li'or payment by tlie Finance Committee, amounting to £28(55 8s 4d, lie passed for payment.” Seconded by Mr Wells and carried. Tho Chairman moved:—“That all existing Committees be discharged ami the Council proceed to appoint Committees as follows:

(a) Finance Committee: Crs. Wells (Chairman), Cliestermaii, .Houston, Jeffries.

(b) Public Works Committee: Crs. .Murdoch (Chairman), Donovan, Keenan, Searle. (c) Councillors to sign cheques: The Chairman, Crs Cheslcrimin, Houston, Jeffries, Murdoch, and Wells. (Seconded by Mr Searle and carried. Mr Wells moved:—“That Overseer Millner report as to proposals and estimated cost (including*•necessary plant) for tar-sealing Kokatalii-Koiterangi main highway in sections of one mile (more or less) as a means of reducing maintenance costs and giving settlers road-conveniences in keeping with the standard enjoyed in other parts of the Dominion.” Seconded by Mr Chcsterlmin, supported by Mr Searle, who suggested that it would ho a good idea to get the Highways Hoard to make a start on the mam highway, suggesting

the road from Hokitika to Kanieri as a start. The motion was carried. .Mr Donovan moved:—“That the Wataron-Waitangi track .be .repaired,. (:;st not to exceed £10.” Seconded by Mr Searle and carried. 1 Mr Searle moved that on return of the grader from south, Redman’s road and Hareourt’s road be graded; that a 12in. pipe culvert He put in near Bergman's,! Kakapotalii. Seconded by Mr. Dofiovan and agreed to. Mr Keenan asked for the Overseer to report as to cost of tarring and sanding of Kokatahi bridge. Seconded by Mr Chesterman and carried. The Chairman moved that Mr Evans be re-appointed as the Council’s representative on the District Highways Board. The Chairman expressed his appreciation of the valuable service rendered to the district by Mr Evans as their representative. He expressed the opinion that the roads of the district were in a much improved condition since the inauguration of the Highways Board. Seconded by Mr Searle, who endorsed the Chairman’s commendation, and the motion was carried. Mr Wells moved that the pot holes in Milltown road be attended to. Seconded by Mr Keenan and carried. The Council rose at 4.5 p.m.
