' FIRE ON MAHENO. (By Telegraph—Press Association). , WELLINGTON, June 11. Prior to tho departure of the Maheno from Lyttelton last night, it was discovered a fire had broken out in a fan trunk in the stokehold. The file which is thought was caused by spontaneous ccgmjbustioii was suppressed in about twenty minutes without any damage to the ship or danger of spreading. THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL. WELLINGTON, June 11. The Tutanekai with .tfie GovernorGeneral and party left the Chathams at three p.m. yesterday and is expected to arrive at Wellington tomorrow morning. BODY FOUND. AUOIvIpND, June 11. The body of Alfred Edward Tinkler, who was a stoker on H.M.S. Veronica, was found floating in the harbour near Devonport, this morning. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. CHRISTCHURCH, June 11. On a charge of arson Harold Petheram, a labourer,' was to-day committed to the Supreme Court for trial. The police alleged accused set fire to a dwelling house occupied by his two aunts in Woolston. Little damage was done. The aunts had previously had a dispute with him. FARMERS’ APPRECIATION. PALMERSTON N., June 11. The party of southern, farmers which have just completed a lour of the North Island ' have given a tangible manifestation and goodwill, which, was emphasised throughout, by presenting a fifteen guinea cup to the Manawatu A. and P. Association as a memento of their visit.
