MONSTER FISH
ON SOUTHLAND BEACH. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.. INVERCARGILL, June 10. There. was stranded on the Oreti Beach yesterday a monster fish which lias, been identified, almost beyond doubt, as a Tuna, the king of big game fish. It was brought to Invercargill, and so far as is known, this is the first Tuna that has been found in New Zealand waters. The discovery of the Tuna ‘on the Oreti Beach provides much food for speculation. Though it may lie that the speculation found was one that had played truant from its school and had inadvertently wandered into southern, seas, it is, on the other band, quite conceivable 'that many more of its fellows are in these waters. They are said to l>e the most erratic of fishes, coming and going without any set of rules; and it is quite possible that they have decided to take up their abode, for a time at least, in southern waters, despite the fact that they are accustomed to warmer latitudes. If this is so, Southland would become a rendezvous of anglers from all parts of the world. The belief that thS's Tuna is the first to be found in the waters off the coast of New Zealand is strengthened by the fact that in Hutton and Drummond’s book on the Fishes of New Zealand, no reference is made to the Tuna, nor does Zane Grey in his recent book on his experiences of deep sea fishing in Now Zealand, refer to them.
