FOOTBALL
SATURDAY’S GAMES. SENIOR,' Excelsior 13, Kiwi 0. / JUNIOR. Ross 21, Excelsiors 3. Arabura 5, Kiwi 3. Saturday afternoon was an unfavourable for good football. Tho weather off' the week had made the ground wet,- and heavy rain about one o’clock made many sheets of water on Cass Square made the ball very greasy and difficult to handle while the pace of the play slowed down considerably on account of the heavy going. No. 2 ground was far wetter than No. 1. EXCELSIOR V. KIWI. i.ill's game played on No. 1 ground was not started till 3.25, and it was difficult to Hollow the ball in the last half hour of the game. Excelsiors won by 13 points to nil. The score was made up of three tries, one hv J. King and two by Stevenson, the latter also converting the first two tries. 'l’lie play in the first half was bright, in spite of the greasy hall, and the Excelsiors showed to decided advantage some olf the handling among the'backs being better than on a fine day. The Kiwi hacks did not get much of the play, the opposing forwards having a good deal the better of the play against their lighter opponents, and the backs opening out play, kept up a spirited attack. , Several passing runs gave the Kiwi defence trouble, then Stevenson went over from a nice run, and lie converted with a good kick. A How minutes later King broke through and scored near the posts for StWenson to convert. A quarter of an hour later Stevenson again touched down for a good try. The first, spell ended with the score 13 to 0. The second half was played in light rain for most of the spell and the play slowed down considerably, the oval being more elusive and tlie ground getting cut up. The play in this half was more even, but the Kiwi team did not look like wiping out their deficit, and though they made some bright sallies, and on several occasions were right on the opposing fine, the weak kicks gave way against a sturdy defence and the danger was shifted. Tlie latter end of the game was played in tlie dusk, and ended without ifiirther score. Mr Cutbusli was referee. ARAHURA Y. KIWI. This junior game played on No. 2 ground resulted in a win for Arahui"’ by 5 points' (a converted try) to 3 points (a penalty goal). The gini” was one of much hard kicking and following up of a greasy ball, the ground having many sheets df water, and was fairly even throughout. In the first half Breeze kicked a penalty goal for Kiwi. The second half had gone about half an hour before Arahura scored a try by Kelly, and then from near the touch line Hamilton kicked a splendid goal, which proved to be tlie, winning movement, there being no further score. Mr McManaway was referee.
