Walker, who keeps an animal and bird shop, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with offering a hiagpie for sale. Walker explained that tlie bird was in his shop. It was a talking hid’d and he was unaware that it was absolutely protected. “Can’t anyone have a magpie?” Mr Hunt asked Mr West, who prosecuted for the Acclimatisation 'Society. “No, Sir,” replied Mr West, “not unless he obtains permission from the Minister.” ~-r , “Well, I know dozens who keep ’-them. I used to have one myself,” said the Magistrate. (Laughter.) f .“A lot of people do not know the law,” said Mr West. “Even the starling is absolutely, protected and may not he offered for sale.” Accepting defendant’s explanation that he had acted in ignorance of the law, Mr Hunt did not fine him, hut ordered him to pay costs.
