CARRIAGE OF WOOL
A STATEMENT REFUTED. DUNEDIN, June 7. Contradiction is given to the statement made by .Mr E. It. Too.’ey (the Port of London Authority envoy) that, “nearly all wool gains weight on the voyage Home, sometimes as much as 101 b per bale, and this gain in weight of ter more than covers the cost of handling in London.” As the contradictions came from persons who ought to know, a “Star” reporter this morning asked Mr E. J. Denny (of J. \Y. Swift and Co.) if lie could give bis firm’s experience, and he replied: “It is important to sheepowners and ethers that Air Toivey's remark should be corrected. It is quite contrary to fact. Our experience over a number of years is that wool does not gain in weight on the voyage. It used to gain to the extend to 31b or 41b per bale in tlie old days of sailing ships, but not so now. In many cargoes there is a loss. If you care to look tlirough our invoices you will see evidence on that point.”
