BOXING.

HANCOCK BEATS PURDY. (Australian Press Association). (Received this day at/8 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 8. At the Licliliardt Stadium last night Wally Hancock (10.14) knocked out Charlie Purdy, the New Zealander (10.2 J) in the fourth round. Hancock thus won the welter championship from the New Zealander. The contest was sensational. Purdy was a better boxer but Hancock was extra confident and', used his right and lefts to the chin, freely, while Purdy went for the body', crouched low and escaped much punishment. Purdy opened Hancock’s eyo in the third round. Hancock bled freely and seemed to go mad. The fourth round opened full of promise. Hancock went after the New Zealander and landed successful rights and lefts to Purdy’s chin,* which always seemed unguarded. Purdy dropped to the boards near the end of the round. He tried to rise .and was again sent dowtx for the full count, the bell failing to save him. . A GREAT FIGHT. * COUNTED OUT AFTER THE - BELL WENT. (Received this day at 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 8. • The “Guardian” on > last night’s fight, says that when Purdy was knocked down in the 4th. round he rose at the count of five, but was immediately dropped again. The packed house screamed with excitement. The bell rang but the uproar was so great that the referee did not hear it. He continued counting over Purdy, who rose at three, hut he was promptly knocked down again for eight. The din was terrific and when he fell to the boards for the fourth time.the referee was still unaware that the hell had sounded, and he crowned Hancock. Actually the bout continued for 25 seconds after tbe bell had rung. ■
