Sir Joseph Ward referred to the deficit in the public accounts. He pointed out that every effort must be made to turn it into a surplus. Every facility must he given trade to expand. He hoped that, within the next year, the Government would find itself in tli'd position olf being able to ensure steamer communication between New Zealand and the East. There was a market waiting in the East for New Zealand produce, such as meat, to eat which the people of those parts had now been educated. New Zealand must look around for fresh markets for its produce. Speaking olf the railways, Sir Joseph Ward defended his policy of pushing on with the South Island Main trunk. He pointed out the necessity for having through and fpiick communication from one end of the country to the other, for. after all. New Zealand was one whole, and was not split up b\ the width of the Straits. He also spoke ofi expediting the laranakiAuckland line, which would save a day’s travel between these two districts. The line would give an outlet for coal that would not he suspected at the present time.
