LONDON, .Line A Sir Hildebrand Harmswortli. formerly proprietor olf the “ Globe ” newspaper, and brothei- of the late Lord Northcliff and Lord Rothermere, left £1,443,000. ,He left one-tenth of the estate to Merton College, Oxford, to create fire scholarships. A noteworthy condition regarding the scholarships is that they shall be available only ifor British subjects who are Protestants, and whose parents and paternal grandfather and great-grandfather are, or were, both British-born subjects and Protestants. The scholarship will be of very considerable value, as after payment of duties it would appear that a net stun df about £90,000 will be available to endow them, giving them an annual value of about £9OO each. Harmswortli explained the terrible taxation entirely crushed his desire to' benefit charities. His estate pays £480,000 in death duties.
