THURSDAY, JUNE Gth t / The monthly meeting of the Society was held at the County Chambers at 7.30 o'clock. Present: Dr Teichelmann (President), .Messrs W. Braddon, Garnet Perry, G. Howe, 1C Paterson, R. J. Appleton, E. J. Lloyd, J. Baker, J. Kelly, A. C. Armstrong. Apology for absence was made lor H. Wells, and two months’ leave ol absence granted to Hr S. Godfrey. The minutes of the Hav meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. IN W A RD CO R.RES POX D EX C E. From Secretary Marine .Department, stating the Chief Inspector ot fisheries was endeavouring to complete draft whitebait regulations, and they will he submitted for local consideration for suggestions to meet local conditions.— Received with thanks. From Southland Society, advising increase in charge lor ova. Received. From New Zealand Railways, replying that the District Engineer would call and discuss the proposal for hot water conveniences at .Bake Alahinapua Station.—Received. From Grey Society enquiry regarding works at Hatchery.—Received. Air Armstrong’s reply was approved. From Auckland Society supplying particulars of grouse imported for Tongariro Park, and also stating partridges imported from Vienna cost 23s fid each.—Received. Resolved to enquire cost, ol 20 brace troni Auckland, and facilities for importing through the High Commissioner. It was decided to enquire if the birds could lie placed with AH W. Diedrichs. From N. D. Campbell, reporting on stalking experiences in the Haast region.—Received with thfiiuvS. From J. Forbes, Christchurch, on same subject.—Received. From F. Ilollberg, Wairarapa, also writing in respect to stalking travels. —Received. From Fire Brigade Demonstration Committee asking donation to liquidate deficiency of £2O. —Received, and £5 voted. From Ranger Cederman reporting on various visits to different parts of Westland, including the south district. - - Received. The Secretary reported the ranger bad been covering a large i
amount of. ground of late, and had taken possession of a number of traps illegally set, and also secured some skins. From Ranger Hodgkinson, report on deer culling, and asking authority to increase the tally to 1500 for the present year.—Received. Resolved the tally be fixed at 1000, and the Otago and Waitaki Societies to authorise up to 500. From Eric James, Makaroa, reporting on southern tourist traffic, and suggesting more huts !>e built.—Received, and resolved that lints be asked for at Bake Paringa, Blue River and Copper Creek. From Brett Publishing Coy. inviting publicity matter for Christmas Annual.—Received. From Auckland Weekly News, to same effect and quoting price for page advertisement. —Received, 'flic feeling of the meeting was against newspaper advertising this year, and in favour of taking space at the Canterbury Industrial Exhibition. Tlie matter was referred to the President and Secretary to* confer with the Progress League and local advertisers next Afonday evening. From Post Office, notifying issue of game licenses at Hokitika, Hari Hari, Otira, to the number of 29—Received. The Secretary reported over it) opossum trapping licenses bad been taken out. GENERAL. Accounts to tlie amount oT £GS 2s Gd were passed for payment. It was resolved to increase the bounty on shag’s bonds to 2s each.
Reference was made to the unofficial representations made to the Minister, of Education by whitebaiters on a recent occasion. It was stated the deputation was not representative of the Whitebaiters’ Association. No action was decided on. The Secretary reported 'in reference to reports regarding illicit trapping, and the matter was left in the hands of the police. The meeting rose at 9 p.m.
