A DEMONSTRATION.

AUCKLAND, June 4. There was a demonstration in the vicinity of the gaol at Mount Eden at 10 o’clock this morning when the Samoan Chief Tamasese was released at the expiiy of his sentence of six months’ imprisonment (for resisting arrest and refusing to pay taxes, imposed by the Samoan. Administration. Those present included members of the Samoan Defence , Committee, Hon. T. Nelson and Mrs Tamasese. A procession of six cars decorated with ribbon in Man colours drove through the city to the Hon. Nelson’s office near , the wharf. Later a large party went to -’•■vs .Nelson’s residence,. Dominion Road, where a reception was held.
SUDDEN DEATH.
DUNEDIN, June 4, •
William Robertson, aged 64, married, died suddenly, at the hospital following an operation. An inquest will be held this afternoon.

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE,
PALMERSTON N„ June 4
A fire at 2 a.m. destroyed a sixroomed dwelling on Boundary Road East, on tlie outskirts of the Borough. The property was that of E. Bruce, who with Mrs Bruce and two children had to make a hurried exit. The dwelling was insured for £1,300 and the contents for £4OO. The owner is a heavy loser, as the contents of the house 1 included valuable pictures and—other articles. ■r •y j,;;

Japanese buyers here purchased the 5957-ton Federal steamer, Sussex, for about £17,000. In place of the Sus- . sex the Union Coy. has chartered the Narata to load at Calcutta about the end of July.
