MAN WHO SURVIVED DEATH
SENTENCE
KONDON, April 16.
Herbert William King, aged 39, condemned to death for deserting t\\ ice from the firing-line in Franco but afterwards reprieved, received 18 months’ hard labour at Norwich (Norfolk) Quarter Sessions yesterday for house-b reeking.
It was stated that King enlisted in 1911 hut was discharged for misconduct. He enlisted again and was sent to Fraiice, where he dosterted from the firing-line.
His sentence of 16 years’ penal servitude was postponed. He again deserted and was sentenced to death l>y shooting., which was afterwards commuted to 16 years’ penal servitude. He- eventually received the King’s pardon and was discharged. . Since then many convictions had' been registered against him.
The Recorder described him as “a menace to the community.”
