LONDON, May 31. Mr Lloyd George’s henchman in the coalition, Sir William Sutherland, failed to win Barnsley. LONDON, May 31. The coal miners’ attitude‘is strikingly shown in the Rotherham electorate, which is essentially a coalmining constituency. The Labour majority there last election was 3148. It is now 10,830.

LABOUR BREACHES

A notable Labour break into Liverpool’s practically solid band of Conservatives lias occurred at the Everton Division, where there was one of tile most interesting contests between the Labourite, Mr Hall Cain (son of Hie novelist) and Miss Margaret Beaven Cain. Ihe contest turned a small Conservative majority of 630 into a Labour majority of 1567.

MINISTERS’ DEFEAT.

Then came the defeat of two of the Ministers.

Next there came an astonishing series of Labour victories, among most striking of which was that at Ecc-les where a Conservative majority of 2205 was turned into a Labour majority of-*. 8237. The Health Minister, Mr Kingsley "Wood had a narrow shave at Vest Woolwich, where there were fourteen thousand more voters. His majority was reduced to 332 'from, 4,200.

His colleague, tho Attorney General, Sir liiskip, lost his seat in a straight fight at Central.’Bristol. His 194 majority was changed to a minority of 4225.

BALDWIN FOR LABOUR!

Tho Prime Minister’s son, Mr Oliver Baldwin, at his second attempt wrested the Dudley seat from the Conservatives by ft turnover of 3928 votes in six thousand of a larger poll.

MR SAKLATVALA OUT.

Mr Saklatvalft, the Communist, whoso anti-British speeches irritated Parliament and''the country beyond endurance, was ousted from Ilattcisea North. He fittingly met the defeat at the hands of the Labourites. Tliero was great surprise when Austen Chamberlain's 1924 majority of 7,6-13 dropped to 50.

BIRMINGHAM CHANGES- TO

LABOUR

Tlie climax of the Conservative’s Birmingham collapse was the defeat of Sir A. Steel Maitland (Labour Minister) whose majority of 5,342 ill (lie straight fiizlit with Labour in 1921 vanished this time.

The Communists fared badly everywhere.

Labour’s victory at Blackburn was n most striking one. because the Conservatives. and Liberals there bad air reed jointly to support each other’s c-a adulate.

STATE OK PARTIES. • ' AT 5 A..M. YESTEHDAY. I.OXDOX, Ala y 31. Tlu* state of the parties at five o’clock this morning was as follows: Labour 121 Conservatives 78 Liberals 13 Others "I THE GAINS.

Labour, fifty-seven. Liberal, seven. Olliers, two. Conservatives, one. THE LOSSES. The losses were:— Conservatives, fifty-one. Liberals, eleven. Labour, three. Others, one. A LATER AGGREGATE. LONDON, May 81. At 5 a.m. the aggregate voles were: Labour 3,278,400 Conservatives 2,883.211 Liberals 1,030,292 Others 100,318 INDUSTRIAL DISTRICTS REVERT TO LABOUR,

LONDON, May 31. The results up till one o’clock in the morning revealed that Labour bad held every seat decided, and bad won ten seats from the Conservatives and two seats from tbe Liberals.

It must be remembered, however, that these returns are very largely concerned with the industrial areas. There is every indication that the industrial districts, which returned Conservatives in the 1924 election have reverted to Labour, which bids promise to restore Labour’s position, to that which it held ill 1923.

POSITION ANALYSED.

GOVERNMENT IN DANGER. LONDON, May 31. At 4.so*ami; there remained more than four hundred results to be declared to-day. • ‘ '•

No one will venture to foretell, in view of the change in the character of the electorate whether the verdict of the counties will follow the lines of the industrial boroughs. It is cleat* from the Ireturiis'at present available/ that the Government is in danger.

Secondly, it. is clear tlmt Labourites have scored heavily. Labour has not scored insufficiently to ensure for it a clear majority in the House over all parties. Thirdly, it is clear that the Liberals have done badly. There has been no conspicuous. sign of a Liberal revival. - “THE TIMES” VIEWS. LONDON, May 31. “The Times” in a leading article says: “It would ho misleading to attempt to ■ deduce from the results thus far wlmt will he the final verdict as these results chiefly are confined to constituencies where Conservative casualties were . expected. They have consisted mostly oF boroughs which have suffered most severely from the industrial depres-

sion.” “The Times”-.—“The most striking feature of the returns thus far.is the damage that the Liberals have done to the Conservative* without born-fitting their own cause.”

QUESTION OF STATE,

(Received this day at 8.30. n.m.) LONDON, May 31.

If the King’s illness prevents the carrying on of his State duties it may complicate the situation, says the “Daily Nows.” It will probably involve a Regency, as the Council. of State, consisting ’of the Queen, Prince oil' Wales, Duke of York, Archbishop of Canterbury, Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, although still in existence is not empowered to dissolve .parliament; consequently constitutional authorities differ whether they can receive the Premier’s resignation and summon a successor.

Parliamentary sanction is necessary For a Regency Act, but, adds the “Daily News,” in view ol‘ the fact that Parliament does not meet before 25th June, the Council of State will probably bold a consultation with Cabinet, the King’s doctors, Labour and Liberal leaders next week.

LABOUR LEADING. POSITION AT 3 p.m. (Received this day' at 10 a.m.) London, May 31. Forenoon results brought little joy to Mr Baldwin who was receiving bulletins at Downing Street. Mr Churchill left the official residence at an early hour and it was remarked that he did not carry Ins usual morning paper.
