PRACTICAL TEST WORK

Toss than two seconds divided the first two' aeroplanes in the annual race for flip Sassoon Cup which was held yesterday.

Part of the race was a practical tost for pilots getting ready for a flight. Each machine was without petrol and was deprived of one wheel. The pilot, with the help of two aircaftsmeii. had to pump ninety gallons of petrol into the tank and fix the wheel.

Flight-Lieutenant, Lea Cox, of the 56th Squadron, R.A.F., won from. Flying Officer Clarke 'of the 29th Squadron, at a sliced of 146 miles an hour, after a close and exciting finish.

CHURCH UNION

DUKE’S CONGRATULATION,

RUGBY, May 30. In his closing address to the General Assemlbly of the Church of Scotland to-day, the Duke of Aork congratulated the church on its acceptance of the scheme of union with the 1 United Free Church, which lias been a feature of the Assembly.

His Royal Highness expressed tin! hope that the union would bring increased strength and resources and would open up fresh avenues of service.

THANKSGIVING SERVICE

EMPIRE CELEBR ATIONS

RUGBY, May 29. The form which has been approved by the King for the thanksgiving service in Westminster Abbey on June 16 is to ho scut by telegraph and air mail to distant parts of the Empire in time for celebrations on that date.
