The eighth annual Winter Show held by the residentsTotf Kokatghi' and Koiterangi at the Public .Hall, Kokatahi, was opened yesterday afternoon under perfect weather conditions and a very large attendance: of residents and visitors. The large hall was well filled wiuA exhibits and it was generally agreed that the ’ quality showed improvement on the' fine-displays of previous years. Two striking features were at the entrance to the hall, on one side the Kokatahi district bay, and on the other the Koiterangi district bay. These were very fine displays indeed and were the subject of very favourable comment. On this occasion the award Avent to the’ Kokatahi bay. A noticeable feature in the Kokatahi bay was model oif the factory made in butter, the, work-, of the manager, Mr J. A. MdCallum. The home cookery and miscellaneous preserves sections filled two* large • fables the length of the hall, and these again were of a highly attractive nature, the housewives of the district shoAA’ing tneir capabilities in a striking, manner. About three o’clock, the forural ripening ceremony took place. Mj\.vW. ; ,A. Jamieson (President) expressed, his pleasure on the occasion of the eighth annual winter shoyfeto welcome those present to the district. . The winter show held from year jito year had brought the quality of the exhibits to a- higher standard. If not quite so numerous as in previous years., the quality was outstanding. The official opening had been usually carried out on the second day, hut this time no invitations had.been sent out and he wished to apologise to the speakers for the absence of an invitation. He was glad they were present to open the Show. He thanked the judges for the manner in which they had carried out their duties. They had had a difficult task in deciding, the quality being even. He would ask Mr O’Brien to address them.
Mr James O’Brien, member for Westland, said he was pleased to lie present to congratulate the people of the district on this magnificent Winter Show. Each year it was a little better. They had everything here, that was needed and showed what can be done by the farmers, men, women, and children. It was particularly good to see the exhibits from the homes. He congratulated the women and cliildren on their very fine exhibits. They showed what New Zealand can provide. The show was an object lesson of what could be made from the land. There was plenty of land waiting for settlement, but the spirit in the past had been to put as many obstacles as possible in the way of the farmer desiring to get on the land. It was through the products of the land that New Zealand was able to pay the interest on its loans. He congratulated the people of Kokatahi and Koiterangi on the splendid show that had been made that afternoon. He would endeavour to start a similar show to be held in 'Greyinouth next year. He again tnanked the President for the opportunity of sayiiig a few words and congratulating the exhibitors on their very fine display. . Mr Bernard Ward (County Chairman) said it indeed was a very great pleasure for him to be present on the opening olf this, the eighth Winter Show. He had attended most ot them and had been struck by the improvements, year by year, in the quality of the exhibits. The people of the d.s-, trict were doing a great good work ...
