CONFERENCE SITS
‘ ’By Telegraph—Press Association;.
WELLINGTON, May 28. The conference of Education Boards was opened to-day by tbe Minister, Hon. H. Atm are. Later the delegates attended a civic reception extended to them.
In the course of an address to the conference, Hon. Atmore expressed surprise that Boards did not hold an annual conference, this being the first for four years. It was bis intention that there should he annual conferences while he held office. He was satisfied the Board system was essential in the best interests of the Dominion but lie was also satisfied there was a multiplicity of boards and in his opinion, unified control would be one of the finest reforms that could be brought about. It would not mean whittling away tbe powers of any Board but rather would tend to strengthen the powers of the authorities in various educational distiicts. He repeated bis frequent references to studying the needs of primary industries and said lie hoped to have the co-operation of Boards in shaping a now educational policy for the Dominion.
