CHEAP COAL
FROM ENGLAND. (.United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, May 24. “Tlie Times’s” City editor says: — Further steamer tonnage is being taken for the conveyance of coal from England to Australia at the rate of 00s per ton, as compared, with only 28s (id per. ton before Whitsun. The rise in the freight rate reflects a demand for tonnage owing to the labour difficulties in the trade in Australia. There is quiet trade on the homeward shipping market,” The article adds: “Although these shipments of coal arc abnormal, it is thought that good British steam coal could he ordinarily delivered in AAest Australia at a rate below the corresponding price of coal term New South Wales.”
“The Times” City Editor also says: English coal sent to Auckland can compete against Westport coal. A quantity of North-cast. English coast coal will probably he sent to New Zealand shortly.
