DESPERATE CONDITIONS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 24. On "day 15th the Department of Internal A (fairs on behalf of Wellington Famine in China Relief Fund Commitlee cabled a further sum of £7OO to the International Famine Belief Committee at Shanghai.

A reply to the cable was received as 'Allows: —“Chinese Foreign Famine Relief Committee, Shanghai, acknowledges Wellington's further contribution of 0700. Famine conditions desperate. Appeal for lurtlier help, long ShaovTii.”

An earlier cable from Shanghai of BJth acknowledging the funds lorwariled from Auckland, lias the following paragraph: “ Urgently appeal for further help; situation desperate; thousands dying daily. Impossible to plant crops. Famine sufferers eating human flesh.”
