MAGISTRATE’S COURT
THURSDAY, MAY 23rd. (Before W. MeUlrum, Esq., S.M.) POLICE OFFENCES ACT. Police charged Janies and D. McPherson with causing unnecessary suffering to 15 pigs, by the manner in which they had tied their legs before shipment from Okuru. A plea ol guilty was entered by Mr Murdoch. Constable Drummond stated the pigs had been brought (from the defendants’ farm for shipment at Okuru. As a result of the manner in which the pigs had been tied, the ship master had warned the owners as to the danger to the pigs. During the journey from Okuru to Hokitika, three had died and on arrival two had died 'on the wharf at Hokitika, which it "as claimed was due to the injury and suffering caused by tying their legs. He did not ask for any severe penalty. Mr Murdoch said any injury caused was done inadvertent'.v by the defendants, who were heavy losers as a result of the loss sustained. The value of the pigs lost was about £2O. His Worship convicted -md inflicted a fine of 20s and costs 19s. CYCLING WITHOUT LIC’T. The Police charged Alexander S • nee (M,r Elcock) with ‘driving a vehiafter dark on the Arahura road without a light. Convicted and fined 5s and costs 10s. The Police charged R. Bradley, M. Dnlglicsh, I. Ditely, J. Macl'arlane, and J. C. Maloney, with riding cycles at night without a light on Arahura road. Convicted and each fined 5s and costs 10s. LICENSING ACT. On charges ol being found unlawfully after hours on , licensed premises convictions were recorded—One offender fEmpire Hotel. Kanieri) to pay costs 12s; one (Keller’s Hotel) to pay costs 10s; one (Commercial Hotel) to pay costs 10s; five (Southland Hotel) one fined 20s and costs 10s; the otheis to pay costs 10s each. The Police charged M. O’Connor with unlawfully supplying liquor and B. O’Connor, licensee of Southland Hotel, with selling and exposing liquor after hours. Air Sellers for defendants pleaded guilty to supplying and exposing, the other charge being withdrawn. For supplying, M. O’Connor was convicted and fined 20s and costs 10s and for exposing, B. O’Connor was fined 40s and costs 10s; BOROUGH BYE-LAWS. Borough Inspector (Mr Park) charged G. Anderson with riding a. cycle at night without a light. Fined os and costs 20s 6d. Same v. F. Saxon, jnr., similar offence; fined 5s and costs 20s 6d. Same v. A. Sullivan, a charge of allowing a motor-car to. stand without a light in Gibson Quay at night: Kined 5s and costs 20s 6d. WANDERING CATTLE. Borough Inspector (Mr Park) charged J. Stopforth with allowing a cow to wander. Fined 5s and costs 20s 6d.
