THREAT OK CLOSING MOTOR WORKS. ■ - LONDON. -May -22.- • Intense interest has been given to the election for the Kings Norton Division of Birmingham by Sir Herbert Austin’s declaration that if the McKenna tariff duties are repealed, lie might have to close his motor works. The Labour candidate, Mr Robert Dennison, now declares, in the name of the Labour Party that if that party is returned to power, and the Austin motor works are closed, then Labour will take them over and carry them on in the interests of the workers. The threat rcea.ls the ignominious failure of workers in creating Soviet Control at the Fiat works at. Turin from which the first seeds of fascism fructified. Austin replying to Denniston says a statement that Government Would take over the works presumably after they are ruined is so nonsensical as to be unworthy of consideration. He would not dream of closing the. works—even if he had the power to do so—without making, a desperate struggle to keen going. He said the motor industry dreaded' the repeal of the'.; lie-. Kenna duties. It would have been .criminal on .his part to have remained silent until damage was done without giving electors facts as lie-saw thpm. The La.hour Party Headqhatefs decline to give any statement regarding Mr Dennison’s assertion. Mr Ramsay McDonald is due to speak at Birmingham on Wednesday, and he will make a statement on the position. Meanwhile the Labour lcnd r ers sav that they are bound to silence!'
