The new Grey County Council, report the Grey “ Argus,” will not ap-' patently be such a tame and orderly body as its predecessors, if the prooedings at yesterday’s annual meeting are anything 'to go by. It was' apparent from the outset that the Council was divided in regard to certain matters of policy which had hitherto been accepted without demur. For several • ears past the election of Chairman lias been a very tame affair, only one candidate being nominated for the •v.isition

On tins occasion, however, two members were nominated, Crs. H. G. Carter and J. W. Hannan. Mr Carter’s nomination was supported by the two new (farmer) members, Crs. A. McDonnell and J. Mulcare; but when tlie second nomination was made, Cr. Carter withdrew from the contest. The main hone of contention, however, was' in regard to the Council having allegedly failed to make the position ~lear to the ratepayers concerning the missing funds, and the’ subsequent dismissal, of an employee ; this'being the subject of a- strongly-worded, epistle from the tirey Valley branch -of the Farmers’ Union, to which \Vas 'attached a resolution to the effect that members of the Branch ‘were unanimous in their demands for the'dismissal of the County Clerk. The new members were, however, metaphorically 'floored ’ y the Chairman’s announcement that the clerk who had been dismissed had been covered by a fidelity guarantee; ■lid "Iso that the Council had complete confidence in the County Clerk. . In a b'st attempt to record their disapproval of the manner in which the coun- N f v ’s affairs were conducted, the .two new members endeavoured to reduce l he Chairman’s honorarium from £IOO to £oo, hut this action was not supported by any other Councillor.
