INCREASE FORESHADOWED. WELLINGTON. May 21. A reference to the question ol taxation was made by the Prime Minister (Sir .Joseph Ward), when replying to a racing deputation to-day. “Changes must lie made in the incidence of taxation; that goes withou saying,” said Sir Joseph. “We cannot have a largo deficit without taking the necessary means to (ill up tho vacuum. In other words, the position cannot he allowed to drift, because the year we are in brings its responsibilities. Of necessity the whole question of finance has to be surveyed and reviewed, and certain proposals .submitted to Parliament in connexion with it.”
