Congress members visited Bumloeng and various institutes of scientific interest, and made air trips. Professor Yanlian Lawson Marshall (New Zealand) discussed measuring gravitation of the Pacific.
Doctor Matsuyama talked about the application ol modern methods for volcano I ogival research. in tbe Ethnological section, Professor Elliot Smith and Professor Radclifi’e Brown, debated totem ism, first from historical and second from a functional standpoint, the latter pointing out that tbe conclusions of noted facts for Government of primitive people were ol the utmost interest. Professor Park, from. Chicago, read about the cross-breeding of races in America.
Professor Burkitt, from Sydney, read a paper of Sir Herbert Murray, Papua’s Governor, about the response of Papua’s natives to western civilisation in which lie pointed out that the natives havo to accept western civilisation or go clown. The writer, who treated the subject from the western and from the native angle voiced humane views and came to an optimistic conclusion. One of the points in favor of western influence, according to Murray, being the ridding of natives from the mortal fear of liialevolant ghosts and sorcery.
