MAORI’S GENEROUS GIFT
A Wellington man who lias just returned from the north relates an interesting story of a lost wallet (states the “Dominion'’). A well known landowner, crossing a neighbour's property, lust his pocket wallet containing over £2OO, which wafound by a shepherd, who returned il to the owner, his only reward being verbal thanks. Two or three week’s filter the head of a nearby Maori pi sent for tbe shepherd. “Y.oii find wallet with money and return to Mr and receive no reward ?”
queried the-Maori. “That’s right.’’ replied the shepherd. “Then T shake hands with honest man,” replied the Maori' “and as owner no reward you. I reward you.” He thereupon took down a large greenstone mere of the value of about £SO and presented it to the shepherd, saying the only condition was that it should he handed down as an heirloom in'the shepherd’s family.
