MURCHISON RAILWAY
WORK BUSILY PROCEEDING
Whatever the ultimate intentions may be in regard to tiie bridging of the gap on tlio Nelson-West Coast railway, it is obvious that the Government intends to push on the northern extension to Murchison without delay. The present terminus is at Ivawatiri, 57 miles from Nelson and 25 from Murchison. The line has. been formed for some, miles further to Gowan Bridge, and gangs of men are working on sections about live miles ahead of that point.
At present 200 men are engaged, and another 100 are expected to arrive this week. Dotted along the route arc groups of accommodation huts and “canvas towns.” The. route to lie followed over the 20 odd miles of track from tiro end of the present formation entails a good deal ol very heavy and necessarily slow work. One helpful factor is the excellent main road which Mums alongside the route for the greater part of the journey, this advantage facilitating .the transpor of .material and equipment for the advance gangs.

Approximately not much over 100 miles would connect Murchison with the Culvcrden railway, the half of which ' distance is already roaded.
