A DIFFICULT FIRE
MANY FIREMEN OVERCOME. (Australian Press Association! (United Service.) (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 18. Firemen dealt with tlie most difficult tire for years in the basement of Queen Viet' r a Market, George St.. City, to-night. The streets were crowded with .sli,.ppc'rs. Twenty-four firemen were* overcome with dense smoke and fumes, and were brought out by comrades with smoke masks and lr.soitailed, but the majority are recovering. The outbreak was in Lindeman’s wine cellars, where there was grave danger of a terrific explosion. Tho fire avos subdued before it spread to the overhead shops.
