That there is an intense desire on the part of many people to get back to the land was shown at Te Ivuiti recently (says an exchange). A farmer who had over 1000 acres of Native leased land, which was subdivided into several farms of over 100 acres with funises, yards, and all conveniences erected on them ready for immediate occupation, advertised the places for ease on a five-years’ term. There were about 180 applicants for the olaces. and keen rivalry as to who should get them, fully one-half of the number being genuinely anxious to get suitable places on which to take their families. Most of the applicants had sufficient capital to buy stock and make a good start, and those who have been fortunate in getting the farms think that with good prices ruling they have prosperous times ahead of them. The Westland Racing Club is having n-n important improvement carried out at the racecourse during the offseason. This is in providing a new starting post for six furlcng events, affording a. .“straight” start instead of a turn as heretofore. To do this to the best advantage, the finisliing post is to be moved some 50 feet along the straight, and will now be moro in the centre of the grand stand. The start at the six furlong post will he widened, as it will be also at the five and a-lialf furlong post. The improvement- is one sure to be appreciated nv horse owners. The Club also proposes to reduce the hill in the cuting to give a better view of the racing at the back of the course. These impr vouents will bo finished in good time r r the Coxing Day race meeting, for whi'li. being a one-day meeting, the Club proposes offering special stakes, and a very successful' ing should result. \ • ■

On the West Coast/ stated the Hon. Mr Atmore at the Technical School Teachers’ Conference, at Wellington, he had found a class of &7 children. .To expect a teacher to discover the aptitudes of the hoys and girls in so large a class, he said, was utterly absilrd. He'had been informed that'fill assistant teacher at that school had been told that her sendees would no longer be required ; but he had said that her services would be required so long as any teacher was given the impossible task of teaching a class pf 67 children, fApplause.'i In another school, added the Minister, he had been shown a very clever plasticine model of an old Maori pa. made by a bey 11 years of age, who had been classed by a previous headmaster as subnormal and unfit to be at the school. If the standard by which the children had been measured had been their aptitude in making, plasticine models, instead of the' usna’ “ academic yardstick,” that boy-would probably have been the dux •of the school; while the present dux might have been classed as subnormal and unfit to attend the school. (Laughter and applause.)
