MURCHISON TRAGEDY
COUNTY CLERK’S WIFE. ■ FOUND DROWNED. WESTPORT, May 15.‘ ' • The sudden death by drowning this morning, of Mrs Hugh Fraser, wife of bhe.jCounty. Clerk of, Murchison, east a., deep gloom.- over .the whole community. . , .... ; . ~ ....... . .... .. .As silo was, missed from her home about oieven o’clock, iiicfuiries'of her whereabouts were made, without success. Constable Robertson and several friends then went in search of the deceased, and her body was found floating, face downwards, in about four feet of water, in a hole under the Matakitiaka Bridge at 1.45 p.m. Life had then been extinct for about two hours. Dr McLean and other’resident's soon arrived on the scene, and the body wiis removed'to her late home. Mrs Fraser' was of "a very happy disposition, and took a keen interest in all matters pertaining t'o the welfare of : the district, and'was also aii j ardent church worker. ’ She was also : Secretary of tile Murchison Branch of j the Plunket Society. During her. 'lengthy connection with ’tlie-latter Society she.did much to promote the welfare' of the women"and' children oi the district.'
