ALWAYS THINGING OF WAR
Leon Trotsky has been telling British journalists at Constantinople what he thinks of us (says the “Manchester Guardian”). He informs our native ignorance that we shall soon be at war with the United States. As for the Peace Pact he declares that it will hasten on this war. I rotsky shares the incapacity of the Russian Communist loaders (and indeed of almost all Communists all the world over) to think of anything except in terms of war. It is not that they want wai for the present (being weak they would rather avoid it), but domestic affairs mean nothing to them except in terms of class war, and foreign affairs nothin*' except in terms of international war. The belief in the absolute inevitability of an Anglo-American war is an unshakeahle postulate of Russian Communism thought (if it can lie called thought). r lhis postulate is reiteiated with strident emphasis at every Communist congress held in Moscow. Trotsky only repeats what has been said a hundred times over. From one who has been in opposition, who has suffered exile, and earned ingratitude, as base as any ever recorded (for, alter all, he was the chief creator of the Red Army), views more original or independent might have been exported. But no, his mentality is altogether Bolshevik and wholly alien to Western civilisation.
