WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD

MONDAY, MAY 13th. The Board at 8 p.m. Present:— Messrs J. J. Breeze (Chairman), G. Davidson, J. L. Turner, A. R. Elcock R. Meliarry, IV. Evendon, M. Keenan E. A. Wells, arid T. IV. Duff. Ah apology was made ffor the absence of Mr Jeffries. ELECTION OF MEMBERS. From D. J.*Evans, Returning Officer for Westland County Council, notify ing election to Board of Messrs David son, Elcock, Jeffries, Keenan, Meliarry and Wells.—Received. From G. F. Coles, Returning Officer for Hokitika Borough Council, notifying election of Messrs Breeze, Duff and Turner.—Received. From G. Pamment, Returning Officer, combined Kumara and Ross district, notifying election of Mr IV. E. Evonden.—Received. WELCOME TO MEMBERS. The Chairman welcomed the new members, Messrs Elcock, Turner and Evenden to the Board table and alse welcomed back tlie old members, expressing the hope ffor a successful term of office. Mr Davidson congratulated the chairman on his re-oiection and joined in welcoming the new members. Mr Duff moved a hearty vote o thanks to the retiring members, Messrs Morel, Heinz and Spiers. Seconded by tlie Chairman and carried. Mr Evenden.thanked the Council for his welcome, and : expressed . the hope that he would be able to advance the interests of the board. Mr Turner thanked members for tlie welcome given. He had been surprised to find on a visit to the hospital the vast amount of work done by Mr Davidson. Air Elcock also acknowledged the welcome extended. COMMITTEES. Tho following Committees were appointed : Finance—The whole Board, with Mr Duff as Chairman. House—The whole Board, with Mr Davidson as Chairman. Reserves—Messrs Wells (Chairman) Keenan, Meliarry, Davidson, Turner, and Elcock.

VOTE OF CONDOLENCE. Tho Chairman moved a vote off condolence with the relatives of the late Francesco Freitas who had been a very old and faithful servant of tlie Board over a long term of years, until lie had retired on pension. The motion was carried in silence, members standing. MINUTES. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. •' From '- Wells family. acknmvledgiilg letter of condolence. —Received. From Hospitals Department in reference to advance on subsidy.—Received. From same in reference to charges for admission to Ring George Hospi tal.—Received. Fi’om Canterbury Hospital Board in reference to claim against a patient.— Received and action resolved upon. From C. J. Trevelyn, Christchurch, thanking Board for assistance given Red Cross movement. —Received. From Secretary, Timber Workers’ Union, notifying list of members. —Received. From Sisters Peters applying for leave for three weeks.— Received and request granted. From Sister Revell, resigning position at hospital.—Received and accepted. From R. Graham, Wailio, acknowledging services given bis son while an inmate of hospital.—Received. From Surgeon-Superintendent Westland Hospital, reporting on Ist April there were 21 patients in hospital; admitted during April, 27 males, 16 femalcs_43; total treated 43 males, 21 females—64; discharged cured, 18 males, 7 females; relieved, 1 male; died, 1 male, 1 female; total disebarg-j ed, 20 males, 8 females —28. In hospi-; tal, 30tli April, 23 males, 13 females—--36. In hospital for two months 0; males, 1 female—lo.—Received. j

TENDERS. I Tenders for painting work at the .hospital were received from— Scott and Co.. £44 13s 4d, labour; only £27 and £2. | Haussmann and Co. £59 14s 6d,| labour only £34 and £2 18s 6d. Tlio tender of Scott and Co. was ac-' cepted. REPORTS. The House Committee reported on requirements at the institution, inelud-i ing the employment of an assistant to help in the farm work and the procur-i ing of a number of articles.—Received. Jt was resolved that applications ho invited for an assistant and the requirements were authorised. Accounts amounting to £329 14s lOd were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported receipts £261 Os 4d ; payments £8034s lid ; debit balance £425 17s sd.—Received.

IN CORRECTION. Mr Davidson said he wished to refer to some remarks made by Dr Buchanan at his send off in which lie took credit for making the road between the two hospitals. Mr Davidson said this was not correct. The road was first made

when Dr James was medical officer to both Westland and Mental Hospitals and was continued with Dr King in charge. Later Dr Macatidrow was appointed as medical officer to the mental institution and the road 101 l into disuse. Later the Mental Hospital authorities cleared the gerse off the track but it was himself (Mr Davidson) who had placed that road in tlie order it was at present, an inmate ol the hospital cutting one of the drains.

Mr Duff endorsed tlie remarks ol Mi' Davidson, having seen him engaged on the work on many occasions. I lie Chairman endorsed these statements.

Mr Davidson paid a tribute to the work of Dr Buchanan in connection with tlie; Mental Hospital, hilt desired to make the correction lie had made. The Board rose at 9.15 p.m.
