PROPOSED NEW SERVICE
CONDITIONS OF TENDERS. WELLINGTON, May 11. The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) stated to-day that the conditions of tendering for' an ocean mail service between the South Island and Melbourne and Hobart have been completed. The matter has taken up a considerable amount iof the Post-master-General’s time, but the specification is now complete. !' It provides for a service every 21 days from. Dunedin to Bluff. Hobart (if i required),Melboqrne, Wellington, Lyttelton and. Dunedin. This is to alternate, with a service every 21 days from Dunedin to Lyttelton, Wellington,. Mebourne, Hobart :(if required), Bluff and Dunedin. It is stipulated that Hobart may be made a port of call in,both directions if required. The tenders are to specify the services excluding \and including Hobart. Tlie steamers employed are to lx l of not less than 5000 tons, with a minimum speed of 14 knots. The firs' voyage shall commence from Dunedin on October, 3rd . The proposed contract is to cover 70 round voyages, which are to be completed in two years.
