ROSS NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent). On Monday evening last at the Ross Railway Station the •members of the stall' and several business people met to say farewell to Mr Stewart Dawson, who is on transfer to Oainaru. Iho Stationmastcr (M r Duffy) and others made complimentary speeches in connection with the services rendered by Mr Dawson during the four years he had served as clerk at the local station, and asked his acceptance of a dressing case and a wristlet watch in token of the esteem in which lie was held. Mr Dawson feelingly replied thanking his friends for their handsome presents and kind remarks. The gathering ended with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Mr Dawson left by Tuesday’s express to take up his duties at Oainaru and carried with him the good wishes ol many friends.
Another farewell gathering took place ~t the Totara Hall on Wednesday evening, a large number of residents assembling to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs S. P. Evans and Miss Evans, who aie taking up their residence in Hokitika. At an interval during the dancing the ’Mayor (H. Osmers, Esq.) voiced the sentiments of those present, regretting the departure of their friends after making Ross their home for so many years, Mr Evans having been a resident for G 1 years. He referred to the many years he had acted on publicbodies, the past tne years being Mayor. Mr Osmers also eulogised the services of .Mrs Evans a.s mayoress, a position she bad filled with credit. Aliss Evans also .had assisted in many ways more particularly in supplying music lor dances and socials Tor the various sporting clubs. ~ The Mayor asked Mr and Mrs Evans acceptance of a well-filled wallet ol notes as a ixift from their many Ross friends and Imped they would have mnnybyears of happiness and prosperity in their new home. The Rev. E. Osmers also spoke in appreciative terms of the departing As Air Evans, owing to indisposition, did not feci equal to replying, Mr G. if Chapman on their behalf thanked the many friends for the expressions of goodwill which the guests .appreciated very much. Supper which had been provided .by the ladies was then served, after which dancing continued till a late houi. During the evening items were contributed by Mrs G. Thompson, Mrs Ablcson, Messrs Pitt, Bridgman and • Houlalmn. . Music for the dance was kindly supplied by’ Airs Crowley (piano) J. Bridgman (piccolo), F. Houlahan (ymlin), extras being played by Miss E. \l r K. Richards made a capable M.C.
