BOXING TOURNEY
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. INTERESTING BOUTS. There was a very fair attendance at Princess Theatre last evening in spite of the inclement weather to view the boxing tourney arranged by the Hokitika Amateur Boxing Club. The bouts started off promptly at 7.30 p.m. and interest was well kept up till the final was completed shortly before 10.30 p.m. Mr A. Behan, of Greymouth, made an efficient referee and the Club’s officials headed by Mr E. Best (lion, secretary) had the arrangements very complete and everything passed off very smoothly. The boys generally gave an excellent exhibition, two midgets oi just over three stone, each fairly bringing down the house and were rewarded with a box ol chocolates each, and a silver coin collection, a towel being placed on the stage and a number of coins gathered in. In the two special bouts, in the first between Freitas and Richardson the latter was much the bigger built, and though the former put up a . good light he had t-"> give way to superior stamina. In the clash between Mofiit and Jaggcrs the latter was much the bigger man. This bout was spoilt by far too much clinching and the .continual call df “ break ” bv the referee to separate the men had to be given. T lie bout was a willing one, but suffered as a result of .too much in lighting. In the boys contests three (lid not go the full distance, the referee stopping one alter the second round owing to an old cut on an eyebrow opening out, while in tlie others a sprained thumb caused them to drop out. The final of babyweight was a close contest and a draw was given. The details are as under: —
