WESTLAND COUNTY ELECTION YESTERDAY’S POLLING. The County Council elections yesterday passed off quietly throughout the district though there was a substantial vote cast. At Hokitika the noticeable feature was the heavy Southern Riding poll, 80 votes being cast here. The general arrangements were very complete and the returns came in promptly. At 7.5 p.m. the complete Central Riding return was announced. Fifteen minutes later the Northern Riding return was complete, while the Southern Riding return was complete a quarter of an hour later, with the exception of one booth (Fergusons) which did not arrive till 8.5 p.m., when the whole return was completed. In the Northern Riding the two sitting members, Messrs B. Ward and J. A. .Murdoch, were returned by substantial majorities though the voting at two polling booths caused some surprise. In the Central Riding, Mr M. Keenan, a former Councillor, heads the list, with the two sitting members offering, filling the other places. lu the Southern Riding, Mr Ah Houston, a new aspirant for County honours, lieadeu the list with a substantial majority, three of the sitting memhcis, Messrs Donovan, Searle, and Jeffries also being elected, while Mr Chinn (a sitting member) and Messrs Mclntosh and Duff were defeated.
