THEFT CHARGE. (Hy Telegraph—per.'Press Association.) WELLINGTON. May 9. On three charges of theft involving 6190 15s Gd, Cornello Hubert De Afey Dalkemade was brought before' the Chief Justice and a jury in the Supreme Court lor trial. Air Alacassey said the Crown alleged a deliberate fraud had been perpetrated by accused on a widow, Jessie Gordon Butzbacli, who believed him to be a reliable min, and that he persuaded her to„. sign documents, the nature of which she was unaware. Evidence was given by Allan Herbert Hournblow, solicitor,,of accused having come to him with ■ a number of documents belonging to Airs Butzbacli, including a power of attorney, and described tlie transactions which followed in regard to ' certain money.’ His suspicions were aroused later and he got into touch until Airs Butzbacli, who said she did not know the nature of the document, but thought it ! had’ something to do witli a friendly society. Accused was in Christchurch at "the time and witness informed the police of the affaii and accused was arrested on his return. Counsel': Don’t you think it would have been better to have waited until accused came back and then to have asked him for a statement. AVitness—Not in view of the power elf attorney. Some discussion took place on the form of the power of his Honour remarking that he would not hesitate for a moment in saying it was a document no solicitor should have prepared. AVitness said the accused had assured him that the document was prepared Ijy a friend who was an accountant. REMANDED FOR SENTENCE. CHRISTCHURCH? May 9. In -the Supreme Court, Frederick Richardson, a gardener,' was ■. foui.id guilty of assaulting John Armstrong at Pajpanui on Alareli Bth, causing bodily harm and was . remanded for sentence. The case was a sequel to a quarrel in Oliristchurob and Armstrong was wounded with a shot gun pellet. ■ • - ■
