MRS STANLEY

CONVICTED OF NEGLIGENT DRIVING. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. The case in which Mrs Stanley was charged with negligent motor driving, resulting in 'one man being killed and. another gravely injured was taken to-day in the Supremo Court. The evidence was identical with that given in the Lower Court a few days ago. For the defence, Helen Gabriel Humphreys was called. She said that •slio was in Main'dlieslter Street, and she saw two moil crossing Belfast Street, one a little behind the other. Mrs Stanley’s car seemed to take a wider sweep than was originally intended, and the speed was slackened a good deal. It seemed as if the men were hesitating as to what they should do, and tlie man at the rear was a very loud-talker. One mail pulled the other’s sleeve, and seemed to drag him into the. accident. Addressing the jury Mr Sargent, for the accused, urged that the occurrence was purely accidental, and that there was no evidence of negligence. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr Donnelly, said that the two men had not had the slightest chance of avoiding the accident. The accused’s car bad been a danger to traffic in Manchester Street, before it turned into Belfast Street. While the case was a very unfortunate and painful one. it would be a /very dangerous tiling if an acquittal mere ijecitred with no explanation of the affair. The jury after three hours’ ictiioinont found Isabella May Stanley to be guilty. The jury .added a. recommendation to mercy on account of Mrs Stanley’s nervous state of health at the time. Tlio accused was remanded until Friday for sentence.
