MAORIS CLAIM £240,000
FOR LAND IN HAWKE’S BAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association). NAPIER, May G. The hearing was concluded in the Maori Land Court at Hastings before Chief Judge Jones and Judge McCormack of the Natives’ claims concerning the Aorangi block. Nine years ago a Royal Commission decided that the Natives of Central Hawke’s Bay had been wrongly dispossessed of an area of 7*200 acres, sold in the ’sixties by the Crown to Air Sydney Johnston. A special Statute gave power to the Native Land Court to take evidence and recommend what would he adequate compensation for th(> period, approximately Go years. The Maoris submitted a claim for £240.00D.t which the Crown representa.ive before the Court opposed. The Judges reserved their decision.
