The ex-Governor of New York State, Mr Alfred Smith (who was the Democratic Presidential candidate) has received the I.aetare Medal from the Catholic University of Notre Dame, as being an American lay Roman Catholic whose achievements in some special field have brought glory to the Roman Catholic 'faith. There was a brilliant, assemblage of prominent personages in the business, religious, social, and political groups, who witnessed the presentation of the medal, which was made by Cardinal Hayes, of New York, at the Notre name Club. A letter from President Hoover was read m which the President said that ex-Governor Smith was “ a distinguished American and a great punlie servant.” '
