ASTRONOMICAL
SOLAR. ECLIPSE. There will be a total eclipse of the sun on .May 9th., but it will not be visible in New Zealand. .Mercury— During .May the brilliance .if this planet will decrease from apparent stellar magnitude minus 0.9 to plus 2.2. Venus —At the beginning of the month the apparent stellar magnitude of Venus will lie minus 3.6, but the maximum brilliaucv, i.e. apparent niaiiitude minus 4.2 will be reached near the end of the month. Mars —This planet will be of apparent stellar magnitude plus 1-4 the beginning of -May, and by the end oi the month ilie brilliancy will have diminished to apparent stellar magnitude plus 1.7. Saturn —The apparent stellar magnitude of Saturn will be plus 0.5 at the beginning of the month. By the end of the month the brilliancy will have increased to apparent stellar magnitude plus 0.3. TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE. 'lit is unfortunate that the total oclip c ol the Sun of May 9th. will not be visible in New Zealand. Several expeditions have gone to Sumatra. Siam, etc., in order to observe this eclipse, and of these and their observing programmes I have written in this column at an enilici date.
