TORNADO DISASTER

KILLS 20 CHILDREN

NEW YORK, May 2.

A Clinchport (Virginia) message states twenty children are known to have been killed and an undetermined number injured in a tornado which demolished a two-storey frame high school at Bye Cove village, ten miles from there.

NEW YORK, May 2

News tjrom Columbus, Ohio, states that two prisoners were killed and six were v injured (three 'serious) when a tornado struck the City Gaol to-day. The prisoners were trapped in their bunks when a “twister” crushed a wall about them.

Varying reports to-night from Gate City, Virginia, State that between 50 and 80 bodies of children have been removed from the wreckage of the Bye Cove High School, which was demolished by a tornado.

Rescuers are working frantically to extricate some 250 children and teachers from the ruins, which are piled above them. Later reports now indicate that VI children are known to be dead, and ninety injured. 47 DEAD. BY AMERICAN iSTORMS. (Received this dav at 8.30. a,m.) NEW YORK, May 3. • Forty-four are dead after the storms yesterday and to-day, in seven Southern States and mid-west. Twentythree were killed in Virginia, including a teacher and thirteen children, owing to the collapse of Rye Cove School.
