SOUTH ISLAND MOTOR UNION

(By Telegraph—Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, May 3. At a meeting of the South Island Motor Union the Chairman stated li£ and two other members waited on Mr W. H. Price, Christchurch manager of the Union Steamship Coy., when reference was made to the high freight charges on cars shipped from one island to tha other. Mr Price pointed out the risk the company ran in case cars were damaged. The Chairman asked if freights on the Tamahine, which could accommodate forty cars, in the Picton-Welling-ton service could not be lowered. Air Price replied that the last points would receive consideration by the company. SAVINGS BANK RETURNS. WELLINGTON, May 3. The x'ost Office Savings Bank returns for the quarter ended March 31st show an excess of deposits over withdrawals of £390,640, compared with an excess of withdrawals over dephsits of £109,417 for the corresponding quarter of 1928. The deposits for the first quarter of 1929 were £6,908,589 against 1928, which were £6,714,421. Withdrawals were £6,517,949 and £6,823,838 respectively. RED CLOVERS. BLENHEIM, May 3. The President of the New Zealand Grain Seed and Produce Merchants Federation (Mr J. J. Corry, of Blenheim) nas been making representations the Department of Agriculture in regard \o the recent report by Mr Bruce Levy, Government Agristologist, •egarding New Zealand red clovers. As Mr Corry anticipated, Mr Levy’s remarks had been misinterpreted by a recent press message.

Mr Levy lias now issued a further statement to clarify the position. Briefly, what he really said was that whilst New Zealand broad red was of itself superior to other countries, the production of this typo itself was not as good for sowing for permanent pasture as the late red and late late red types.

PALMERSTON N., May 3. A sequel to an episode which occurred on the night of March 31st, took place at court this morning when Lionel Clifford Nimmo, aged 20, was charged with common assault wherein a local domestic was concerned. The original charge of indecent assault was reduced as above on counsel’s application this morning. Accused pleaded guilty. The police statement said a party of young people were celebrating not wisely and all got considerably the worse for liquor. Apparently there were faults on both sides. Counsel for accused said the latter pleaded guTltj to avoid publicity to the parties concerned. Accused had borne a good character. The Magistrate refused counsel’s suggestion to impose a nominal penalty and fined Nimmo £5 and costs. An application for the suppression of his name was refused. ALLEGED THEFT. WELLINGTON, May 3. In the Magistrate’s Court, William George O’Brien, company manager, was charged with failing to account for £2l 12s 7d to the. Colonial Motor Cov. Ltd., Auckland. He was remanded to appear at Auckland on the 10th. The Chief Detective said there were other charges involving £SB.
